Sometimes, passages open up in the landscape that allow us a glimpse into other worlds than the one we know. Where the birds are*, the gateway between the material and the spiritual world opens for a moment. Those who dare, can cross over.

The pinhole camera or camera obscura is an indispensable tool to record the dusky line between these two worlds. Because the camera has no lens, everything that appears in the atmosphere and the landscape is recorded without being altered or falsified by an intermediary. In that way, a layer in reality is revealed that is otherwise invisible.

*Torii: Japanese, litt: “Where the birds are”. Torii is the entrance to a Japanese Shinto temple, the gateway between the material and the spiritual worlds.
